Components
Overview
Components are Joomla! extensions written by the Joomla! community which enables you to add new functionality to your web site. Over 3700 extension are availaible to download from the Joomla! extensions web site and whatever new functionality you need for your website you'll probably find it here.
Components sometimes come with their own plug-in's and modules which are either automatically installed or available to download and install separately.
Once a component is installed it will appear under the components menu
Joomla! components are archived in zip files and contain all the files that are needed. Some components contain optional modules and plugins and these are normally contained in zip files within a zip file. These type of bundled zip files normally have a phrase along the lines of UnZipMeFirst in the main zip filename. Once you unzip the main zip file you will then see the seperate zip files which can be installed separately.
Install
- Download the zip file to your PC.
- Unzip the file is the file specifies it (NewZappyComponent_UnZipMeFirst.zip)
- Extensions->Install/Uninstall
- Click the Choose file button and browse to the zip file
- Click the Upload file and install button
After the component is installed you will normally see a banner screen displaying more information about the component. Some components are large and may take time to install as the installation process has to first upload the file from your PC and then begin the installation.
Once the component is installed you will need to enable any plugins and modules that the component has added.
Uninstall
- Select components->Install/Uninstall from the main menu
- Click the components link
- Select your component
- Click Uninstall
Most components will keep your settings for the component in a database table just in case you decide to reinstall the component.
